How to get to Pompeii from Rome by train

Take the train from Rome to Pompeii and discover this fascinating ancient Roman town with no hassle at all. The average journey time by train between Rome and Pompeii is 2 hours and 15 minutes, with around 26 trains per day. 

Just south of Naples, Pompeii is an easy day trip from Rome by high-speed train – simply follow our steps below for a smooth and stress-free journey.

Step 1, take a high-speed train to Naples

  • Most days, there’s no direct train from Rome to Pompeii, so you’ll need to stop in Naples and change
  • High-speed Frecciarossa and Italo trains frequently depart from Roma Termini to Napoli Centrale throughout the day, with an average journey time of 1 hour and 14 minutes
  • Make sure you plan your journey ahead of time if you want to save on money

Step 2, take a regional train from Naples to Pompeii

  • Once in Naples, simply step off the high-speed train from Rome and follow the signs to get to Napoli Garibaldi station downstairs
  • Trenitalia’s regional trains run from Naples to Pompeii station, which is right in the town centre and just 10 minutes away from the ruins
  • Don’t confuse the station served by Trenitalia with Pompei Scavi (Villa dei Misteri) station, which is on the train line operated by the local Circumvesuviana train

Step 3, have a walk to the ruins

  • Walk out of Pompeii station and in just 10 minutes you’ll reach the Amphitheatre Gate (Piazza Anfiteatro), where you won’t probably have to queue for a long time as it’s not the main entrance (Porta Marina)
  • The ruins are open every day from 09:00 to 19:30 from April to October and from 09:00 to 17:00 from November to March.

Frecciarossa, Italo and Trenitalia trains from Rome to Pompei

You can travel from Rome to Pompei on Frecciarossa, Italo and Trenitalia trains. When you search for times and tickets, we might also show you some other options with multiple connections or operators if they’re available.

Frecciarossa trains are Trenitalia's flagship high-speed trains capable of reaching speeds of up to 186 mph (300 km/h). The "red arrow" trains are distinguished by their comfort, their ultra-modern design and their reduced impact on the environment. All Frecciarossa trains are equipped with a food carriage, a free WiFi connection and four levels of service – Standard, Premium (with drinks and welcome snacks served on arrival, as well as a morning newspaper), Business (with drinks and snacks, morning newspaper and larger seats) and Executive (with Fast Track, access to FrecciaClub lounges in train selected stations, and gourmet meals served to your seat). From December 2021, you can also travel with Frecciarossa from Milan to Paris via Turin, Modane and Chambéry. The trains are operated by Trenitalia France and have 4 levels of service - Standard, Business, Executive and Meeting Room - and two types of carriages: Silence Area, for those who want to travel in total tranquillity, and Allegro Area, for those who want to chat with their fellow passengers.

Italo is a high-speed train operator that runs services between many of the major cities across Italy. All Italo trains are modern, air conditioned, and have free WiFi available for all travellers. There are four comfort classes, or "ambiances", as Italo like to call them – Smart (the cheapest price), Comfort (with wider seats and extra legroom), Prima (with a welcome selection of food and drink, fast track boarding and extra space), and Executive Club (with all Prima services, extra-wide seats, access to Italo Club lounges and personal entertainment screens at your seat).

Trenitalia is the national railway company of Italy, with a fleet including high-speed trains (Frecciarossa, Frecciargento and Frecciabianca), Intercity and Intercity night trains and regional trains. Trenitalia offers discounts and special promotions on selected routes, two types of discounted tickets for young people under 30 and people over 60.

Cheap train tickets from Rome to Pompei

On rare occasions, train companies may choose to release special offers closer to the date on last-minute or late-release tickets. This is dependent on the individual train operating company you travel with.

Direct trains from Rome to Pompei

Starting August 6, 2023, there will be a direct train from Rome to Pompei every Sunday morning. It will leave Roma Termini at 8:53am and arrive in Pompei at 10:40am. This service will be a high-speed service run by Trenitalia, so you’ll be traveling on a Frecciarossa train.

And if you’re just looking to take a day trip to Pompei, you’re in luck! There will also be a direct train from Pompei to Rome every Sunday evening. This train leaves Pompei at 6:40pm and arrives back in Rome at 8:55pm, before carrying on to Florence where it arrives at 10:58pm.
