It’s around a 13-minute walk from Porthmadog station to the Welsh Highland Railway and it’s a really easy route – head out of the station and turn right onto High Street, follow the road down towards the roundabout, carry straight over and continue walking towards the harbour, you’ll cross over a bridge and the Welsh Highland Railway will be on your right. Porthmadog is served by regular Transport for Wales trains from stations including Pwllheli and Machynlleth along the Cambrian Coast line.

More about the Welsh Highland Railway
The Welsh Highland Railway is one of a few narrow-gauge heritage railways in Wales and one of two railways to run through Snowdonia National Park.
The entire journey from Porthmadog to Caernarfon takes around six hours in total, although you can take shorter trips along the line and back. Stations along the line include Pont Croesor, Nantmor, Plas y Nant and Dinas. If you’re visiting with a young family, why not stop off at Beddgelert (around 40 minutes from Porthmadog) where you can hear all about the legend of Gelert, the faithful hound of Llewelyn the Great.
We’d recommend setting aside at least half a day to explore the Welsh Highland Railway, or why not make a weekend of it if you plan on travelling from one end of the line to the other.
