Travelling to South Devon Railway by train? The nearest mainline station is Totnes. You can hop on a CrossCountry service from Plymouth or a Great Western Railway service from London Paddington to get there. Originally opened in 1872 for the movement of coal, wood and other goods, the line was re-opened as a tourist attraction in 1969. During a trip along the South Devon Railway, you'll visit Totnes Riverside, Staverton and Buckfastleigh stations, all with their own unique reasons to hop off the train and take a look around.
Special events including themed dining trains and train driver experiences run throughout the year, so enthusiasts, families and group trips will all find something to suit their interests.
We recommend you spend at least half a day exploring the South Devon Railway, a round trip from Totnes to Buckfastleigh and back takes around 1 hour and 20 minutes and there's also the museum, the gift shop and plenty of walks around Staverton station to explore.
