Taking the train from Interlaken Ost to Zermatt
Catching the train from Interlaken Ost, you'll reach the famous ski resort of Zermatt in around two hours. About 50 miles separate these two gems of the Swiss Alps, and you'll probably end up covering the distance on a combination of national provider SBB's Intercity and Regional Express trains, with two changeovers along the way. Hearing that, driving might sound like a more straightforward option, but there's a snag in that Zermatt is a combustion engine-free zone, with only eco-friendly electric cars allowed within the town perimeter.
Zermatt sits at the foot of the mighty Matterhorn, with funiculars and cable cars running regularly to popular ski areas like Sunnegga and Gornergrat. The main shopping district is right outside the railway station, and you can walk around the rest of the town with its cosy chalet-style architecture in half an hour or so, so you'll never miss the car.
