An important stop for trains between London and the south coast, Winchester station is every inch the traditional Victorian railway building, with a crisp white facade, a smart canopy and a prominent black and white clock over its main entrance. The station has been welcoming visitors to the city since 1839 and was renovated in 2004, adding a second ticket office. More recent upgrades include a new footbridge incorporating lifts, and an extension of the car park.
Trains to Winchester take just an hour from London Waterloo, and within a 10-minute walk, visitors can be in the historic heart of the city. Attractions include the huge Gothic cathedral, the 15th-century market cross and the Victorian Guildhall, plus a wealth of independent shops and restaurants. There are two platforms at Winchester station. You can get into the station from either the west side via Station Road (direct access to platform 2 for trains travelling south) or the east side via Stockbridge Road (direct access to platform 1 for trains to London and the North). There are car parks, ticket offices, cycle storage and ticket machines on both sides. The taxi rank, drop off point and bus stops are outside the front of the main entrance on Station Road.
