Before the railway arrived in 1843, the chief transport route for Ware's crucial malting industry was the River Lea, which runs through the town centre. Barley flowed in and malt flowed out, on its way to become beer in the breweries of London. The river is still a major part of life in the town, but now its focus is more on pleasure than on business, with beautiful riverside walks, formal gardens and nature reserves all nearby. Under 10 minutes' walk from Ware station, across the river, is the compact town centre with a traditional mix of high street retailers, independent shops, pubs and cafes. A few minutes further on in the grounds of the Priory is Ware Lido, an open-air heated pool where you can swim from May to September. Several picturesque cycle routes connect the station with other attractions in Hertfordshire, including the Cole Green Way to Welwyn Garden City.
Ware Station is on the Hertford East Branch Line, with only one platform for trains both towards and away from London. There are usually two trains an hour to London Liverpool Street via Tottenham Hale (around 45 minutes) and two trains an hour to the terminus at Hertford East (8 minutes). Outside the ticket hall you'll find a pay-and-display car park, cycle storage, a taxi rank and a cafe next door.
