Trains to Twickenham arrive at a neat, efficient station just a stone's throw from the home of the England Rugby Team. Twickenham Stadium – or 'HQ' to England rugby fans – is the fifth largest sports stadium in Europe and the largest rugby venue in the world; so needless to say, the station can get busy on match days, with spectators pouring in on regular trains from London Waterloo.
The previous station, a Neo-Gothic structure with similarities to the nearby estate of the writer Horace Walpole, first opened in 1848, but was demolished following the construction of the new station in 1954. The current building is halfway between Twickenham Stadium and the town's pretty stretch of Thames riverside, which includes traditional pubs, attractive gardens and the famous Eel Pie Island. Turn right out of the station to reach the stadium, and left to reach the river – both are a 10-15 minute walk away.
