South Milford railway station lies just outside the small community of South Milford and serves the surrounding North Yorkshire villages just east of Leeds. It was built in the 1830s as just ‘Milford’, making it one of the oldest stations in the country. Several decades later, the name was changed to South Milford to align with the nearest village’s name. At one point, the station had a series of beautiful brick buildings and signal boxes, though they were torn down in the late ‘70s. Today, the station and the trains that pass through are managed by Northern. Facilities at the two-platform station are a little sparse, but there are shelters on both sides of the tracks. Passengers are required to buy their tickets in advance or on board the train with the guard. There is an hourly direct train service to Leeds in 25 minutes and Selby in 12 minutes.
South Milford might be small, but there’s plenty of things to do when you arrive. If you come at the right time, you could catch one of the summer matches at the South Milford Cricket Club, take the dogs on a walk around South Milford Park or grab a bite to eat at the Cumin Lounge.
