Slaithwaite railway station lies in the heart of West Yorkshire and is used by the small community of Slaithwaite and the surrounding villages just outside Huddersfield. It was opened in the mid-19th century by the then London and North Western Railway and grew to four platforms and a busy daily schedule of departures. Unfortunately, after the Beeching Axe, the station began to decline in numbers and it was closed in the late ‘60s. It reopened 14 years later and is now managed, along with the trains that pass through on the Huddersfield Line, by Northern. It’s an unstaffed station that handles more than 200,000 passengers a year who are required to either purchase their tickets online or using the self-service machines on one of the two remaining platforms. Facilities are basic with just timetable posters, digital passenger information displays, and waiting shelters on both sides of the tracks. There’s a direct train every hour to Huddersfield in 6 minutes and Manchester Piccadilly in 33 minutes.
Slaithwaite is a busy little place with plenty to do. If you visit at the right time, you could catch one of the matches at the Slaithwaite Cricket and Bowling Club. Alternatively, dive into the town’s foodie scene at Ashby's Deli Cafe or The Handmade Bakery.
