Trains to Selly Oak

Selly Oak railway station is in the outer neighbourhood of Selly Oak in South Birmingham along the Cross-City Line. It was opened in the second half of the 19^th century on the Birmingham West Suburban Railway branch to serve the growing populations on the outskirts of the city. It fell out of importance in the ‘60s and unfortunately, the original brick station buildings were demolished in favour of a simpler structure which was built by British Rail in the late ‘70s. Unlike many British stations, there is still a staffed ticket office which is open every day. The two platforms are connected by a footbridge and there is a long overhead cover providing shelter on one side and waiting shelter on the other. Other facilities include digital displays, bench seating and a large 93-space car park at the front. Today, the station and the trains that pass through are managed by West Midlands Railway. Getting into the big city is a breeze with four direct trains an hour to Birmingham New Street in just 10 minutes, though this drops to two an hour on Sundays.

There’s plenty to do where you arrive at Selly Oak station. If you’re looking to visit a friend or relative at the University of Birmingham, it’s the easiest station for reaching the campus. Alternatively, you could bring the kids to the world-famous Cadbury World where they can learn about the history of the iconic brand and, of course, taste its favourite bars.
