The train journey to Seaford is one of the most pleasant in the UK, traversing the River Ouse before following the line of the southern Sussex coast and pulling into the station just five minutes away from the town's pebble beach. Opened in 1864, the station was originally designed as a through station, with the line continuing to Eastbourne. It ended up as the terminus of a branch line of the East Coastway Line between Brighton and London Victoria. A miniature model railway of Seaford Station produced in the 1920s is displayed at Seaford Museum.
A major port during the Middle Ages, Seaford was regularly attacked by French pirates in the 14th, 15th, and 16th centuries, and had to be rebuilt several times. The arrival of rail turned the town into a seaside holiday destination that remains popular to this day. As well as a bustling high street, Seaford also offers tremendous walking opportunities with links to the South Downs and The Seven Sisters Country Park.
Seaford station's entrance is off Station Approach, and leads into the ticket office, with a side entrance leading directly to the platform. The station is easy to navigate, as there's just one platform, with all departures heading west to Brighton. There are easy-access toilets on the platform as well as cycle storage, some bench seating and a ticket machine. There's a cafe, a small local art gallery and a car park outside the station.
