Rutherglen railway station lies in the centre of the town of the same name just a few miles south of Glasgow along the Argyle Railway Line. It was opened in the mid-19th century, though some 30 years later it was moved almost a kilometre up the tracks to its present location. The station fell out of importance after services were withdrawn after the Beeching Axe in the mid ‘60s, though many of the services have now resumed. In 2009, it was refurbished to include disabled access in a programme looking to improve all of Scotland’s stations. Today, the station and the trains are managed and run by Abellio ScotRail. There are two platforms and facilities that include a ticket office, self-service ticket machines, waiting shelters, digital passenger information displays and PA systems. There are up to 6 trains an hour direct to Glasgow Central in just 6 minutes making it a popular commuter route.
When you arrive in Rutherglen, you’ll find several historical sites near the station including the Rutherglen Tower, the Hindu Temple of Scotland and Rutherglen Town Hall, as well as plenty of stores at the Rutherglen Shopping Centre.
