Reading West railway station lies in the western suburbs of Reading around a mile from the city centre. It was opened in the mid-19th century by Great Western Railway along the route from Reading to Newbury. It was originally built to serve as a stop between stations in the North and South of the country without having to reverse out of the city’s main station. It’s a staffed station with a ticket office open during the mornings. There are two platforms connected by a footbridge and facilities that include benches, canopy shelters and help points. There are at least three trains an hour direct to Reading in 4 minutes and two an hour direct to Basingstoke in 23 minutes during peak hours.
There are several points of interest within walking distance of Reading West railway station including the leafy Prospect Park where you can walk among the mature trees of the former stately gardens. Alternatively, if you’re in need of a little retail therapy, try the nearby Broad Street Mall.
