Lying on the Brighton Main Line between Croydon and Redhill, Purley Oaks train station serves the suburban residential area of South Croydon, approximately 12 miles to the south of Charing Cross. Train services are provided by Southern from this Travelcard Zone 6 station. There are typically four train services per hour each way in off peak times. The main destinations are London Victoria, with a fastest journey time of 29 minutes, and London Bridge which is 22 minutes away.

Purley Oaks train station opened in 1899. It has four platforms, though there is currently no public access to platforms 1 and 2. Platforms 3 and 4 are accessed via a subway and stairs. A ticket office and waiting room with toilet facilities can be found at the top of the stairs on platform 3 and there is a self-service ticket machine in the subway. The nearby Kenley Aerodrome was one of the key Fighter station used by the RAF during the Battle of Britain.
