Trains to Penrith pull in directly opposite the formidable ruins of the town's 15th century castle. It's the perfect welcome to this historic and charming town. Also known as Old Red Town thanks to its beautiful sandstone buildings, Penrith is so traditional that its station operated a handwritten departure board right up until 2006. Built in 1846, the station is an important stop on the West Coast Main Line, and is also referred to as Penrith North Lakes. Once the administrative capital of Cumbria, Penrith is now an important shopping hub. The historic town centre with its ancient streets - Burrowgate and Sandgate date from the 13th century - is home to a great range of independent shops and restaurants, all within a one-mile radius of the station. With the North Pennines, Lake District and Hadrian's Wall all on the town's doorstep, this is also a great starting point for a walking holiday.
Penrith station has two main entrances, both leading on to platform 1 (towards London and Manchester). Inside the ticket hall you'll find ticket machines, ATMs and a ticket booth. A subway connects platform 1 to 2 (towards Glasgow and Edinburgh) and 3, where you'll find a waiting room. Toilets are on platform 1. There are two car parks and a taxi rank.
