Newport railway station in South Wales is known locally as Gorsaf Rheilffordd Casnewydd and is the third busiest station in Wales (after Cardiff Central and Cardiff Queen Street). Newport station underwent extensive redevelopment starting in 2007 and in 2010 opened a new station building and facilities including four full-sized platforms. These extended platforms now capable of accomodating the new GWR 10 carriage Intercity Express trains.
Transport for Wales, CrossCountry, and GWR all provide services from the station and destinations include Manchester, Carmarthen, Cardiff, Port Talbot, Swansea, Llanelli, Bangor, Gloucester, Birmingham, London, Bristol, and Portsmouth to name just a few!
On the UK rail network, there are 2 Newport stations, the other being in Essex. To avoid confusion train tickets to and from both stations have either Essex and South Wales prefixed to help differentiate the two.
