Trains to Newport travel on the West Anglia Main Line between Cambridge and London Liverpool Street station. Newport train station dates back to 1845 and is similar in design to many other stations built along the London to Cambridge line during that period. Look out for Newport’s two Victorian Arts and Crafts fireplaces, built from cast iron and designed by the architect Thomas Jeckyll.
The village of Newport is a short walk from the station along Station Road and is the centre point of the long-distance figure-of-eight walking route ‘The Harcamlow Way’. The village has become a popular destination for walkers, with numerous routes leading out from Newport towards Saffron Walden and Widdington, among other places. Don’t ramble out of the village before exploring it, though – Newport is also home to a clutch of interesting old buildings, including the 15th-century Monk’s Barn and the 14th-century St Mary the Virgin church.
