The first trains arrived at New Cross Gate in the 1830s, but the current station dates to 1858 and the extension of the line from London to Brighton. Today New Cross Gate is on the East London Line of the London Overground, with northbound services to Dalston Junction and Highbury & Islington, and southbound services to West Croydon and Crystal Palace. Other trains to New Cross Gate include services from London Victoria, London Bridge, Horsham and Caterham.
Running east from the station towards the nearby New Cross station is New Cross Road, with its collection of pubs, bars and restaurants. South of here, and directly next door to the station, is the Goldsmith's University of London campus, whilst Fordham Park lies a little way to the north. On the opposite side of the tracks to the university is the New Cross Gate Retail Park and the Haberdashers' Aske's Hatcham College.
