London Waterloo East station is found in the south of central London, and is not to be confused with the much larger London Waterloo station. There is a walkway that connects the two stations, found in the main concourse of Waterloo station. All trains that pass through London Waterloo East are served by Southeastern, which start and end at London Charing Cross station. Trains from London Waterloo East typically serve the south-east suburbs of London and Kent, with trains to Gillingham, Dover and Hastings at both peak and off-peak times leaving from the four platforms at the station.

There are many transport links from London Waterloo East, and the adjoining Waterloo station. There is a pedestrian entrance to Southwark underground station at the eastern end of the platforms. Using the walkway to Waterloo station, you can also jump on the Bakerloo and Northern lines.

Ramps access to the platforms is steep. There is no ticket office. Full ticket office facilities available in Waterloo Main station. There is an entrance from Southwark underground station but this involves either steps or an escalator. There is also a step only access available from the Sandall Street entrance onto the overbridge connection between Waterloo East and Waterloo main stations. Taxis and direct road access only available from Waterloo main station which is connected via ramps and an overbridge to Waterloo East station.
