Trains to Kirkby

Kirkby station is a thriving interchange in Merseyside, situated between Liverpool Central and Manchester Victoria. The station dates back to 1848, although the station buildings were rebuilt in 1978 and moved to the opposite platform. The arrival of rail had a profound impact on the town, which before the mid-1800s was a farming community – the new transport links opened up the area, and both industrial and residential development swiftly followed. Kirkby is part of the borough of Knowsley, and grew quickly in the decades after WW2, as new housing was built to replace that lost to bombing in Liverpool City Centre. Today, the population is 40,000, with employment mostly provided by the Royal Ordnance Factory and several call centres. It’s also a base for Liverpool commuters, who can reach the city by train in around 20 minutes. While housing dominates, local green spaces include Valley Park and the Green Flag accredited St Chads Gardens.
