Hightown train station sits on the Merseyrail Northern Line between Formby and Hall Road. The station has daily services to Southport and Hunts Cross with stops also available at Liverpool Central. Four services arrive hourly at the station en route to Southport from Monday through to Saturday, this service on a Sunday requires a change at Formby. Travelling to Hunts Cross from Hightown station will take around 45 minutes, and there are daily services available.

Both platforms are accessible to wheelchair users. The platforms are connected via a footbridge. Platform 1 has facilities including a waiting room for passengers awaiting their train service, and additional outdoor seating is also provided. On platform 2 there is a shelter available for passengers. A ticket office is open from Monday through to Sunday at the station, and a vending machine can be found within the ticket office.
