Guildford railway station is the larger of the two stations in Guildford town centre. The station originally opened in 1845, but it was rebuilt in 1880 and again in the 1980s. Today it's a busy hub for commuters and for students at the University of Surrey, with services from Surrey, Berkshire and Hampshire passing through on the way to London Waterloo and London Victoria.
The town's pleasant retail centre is just a 10-minute walk from the station, and is one of Guildford's key attractions, with historic buildings alongside modern shops. Look out for the 17th-century Guildhall and the Royal Grammar School, built in 1507. The River Wey is another showstopper; running between the station and the town centre, it was once the lifeblood of Guildford's commercial success, and some of its 17th-century locks are still in use today. Head to Shalford Park, a little way south of the station, to relax by the water.
