Clapham may share a name with one of the busiest train stations in the UK, but this station in rural North Yorkshire is a whole world away from the relentless pace of the capital, with just 7,624 passenger journeys starting or ending at the isolated mock-Tudor station 48 miles north-west of Leeds. But those that do make the journey have a treat in store for them. Nestled at the edge of the Yorkshire Dales National Park and the Forest of Bowland Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, Clapham station is a gateway for exploring hundreds of square miles of some of the most peaceful, wild and unspoilt landscapes in the country. Clapham village, a mile away from the station, is the starting point for trails up nearby Ingleborough, one of Yorkshire’s Three Peaks and even boasts its own waterfall and showcave.
Clapham station is on the Leeds-Morecambe line with five trains heading in either direction per day, apart from Sundays when it’s four. The station is unstaffed and tickets must be purchased on the train. Platform 1 is for trains to Leeds and there’s level access to this from the car park. Platform 2 for trains towards Lancaster and Morecambe is only accessible up the stairs and over the footbridge. The car park is free to use for railway passengers.
