Trains to Cathays

Cathays train station is one of 20 stations in Cardiff, all managed and served by Arriva Trains Wales. It is located in the Cathays area of the city, near Cardiff University’s Student Union and several other university buildings. Consequently, many of the area’s large terraced houses are occupied by students. Cathays is also the closest train station to Cardiff’s National Museum and the historic Cardiff Crown Court, which now houses the Welsh Government administrative headquarters. 

A railway line has run through Cathays since the 1840s, originally connecting to the Cathays railway works and depot. The current station opened in 1893. It consists of two platforms, linked by a footbridge, with shelters and seats for passengers. The station also has staffed concourse and self-service ticket machine.  

Trains from Cathays train station depart six times an hour to Pontypridd and continue to Aberdare, Merthyr Tydfil or Treherbert. Services in the other direction travel to Cardiff Central, a 6 minute journey away, with some trains continuing to Barry Island or Bridgend. The fastest service to Pontypridd takes 21 minutes. The area is also served by several Cardiff Bus routes, and Cardiff’s busy Queen Street is a 20 minute walk away.
