Carstairs train station is located on the West Coast Main Line, close to the point where the lines to Glasgow and Edinburgh diverge. Originally opened in 1848, it was an important junction where northbound trains were split into sections before continuing their journeys to Glasgow, Edinburgh, Stirling and Perth. Southbound services were re-combined here before continuing their journey south.
ScotRail operates services from Carstairs train station every two hours on Monday to Saturday. Trains depart for Glasgow Central, a journey of 41 minutes, and Edinburgh Waverly which takes 44 minutes. Trans Pennine Express also operates one daily service to Glasgow Central. There is no Sunday service.
Carstairs train station has a staffed ticket office and a shelter and toilets on the platform for waiting passengers. Access to the island platform is by stairs via a footbridge. The village also stands on the A70 and two bus routes provide local transport connections.
