Burnley Central train station is one of four serving the Lancashire town of Burnley, once one of the largest producers of cotton cloth in the world. Originally opened in 1848, the station was used by local cotton mill owners who travelled to the Royal Exchange several times a week to purchase raw cotton. By 1911 there was over 100000 power looms in the town. Since this time, the station has suffered a huge decline in traffic resulting in the removal of the eastbound platform and second line and a demolition of the original signal box. Only part of the westbound platform remains in use today. A ticket hall, toilet and waiting area were added in 1965.
