Bishops Stortford station opened in 1842 as a temporary terminus on a line from London that would extend, a year later, to Norwich. Trains to the station today run on the Liverpool Street to Cambridge Main Line, with some services to the capital terminating at Stratford. Bishops Stortford is the closest town to Stansted Airport and the station is a stop on the Stansted Express service to Liverpool Street station. The town centre is immediately to the north of the station across the River Stort, and is somewhat dominated by the Jackson Square shopping centre. There are, however, many other shops, including independent stores in the streets around, as well as numerous pubs and restaurants. Also in the town centre, you can explore the remnants of Waytemore Castle, mostly buried beneath a grassy mound, and the Castle Gardens, which run north from the town centre, and the castle ruins alongside the river.
