Rail first arrived in Barnsley in 1850, and the brand new transport network sparked a workers' revolution as men from the surrounding rural outposts flocked to the town to take up work with the burgeoning linen industry. For many, it was a short-lived venture and the industry diminished by the early 20th century. But the town's population had boomed and as a result many workers transitioned to the coalmines, which survived well into the 1980s.
Today, the town is a popular shopping and social hub with its famous food market - dating back some 750 years - a star attraction. Trains pulling into this friendly South Yorkshire town arrive in the Barnsley Interchange, a vibrant and modern, pastel green structure boasting numerous retail booths and a bus station - right in the centre of town. A short walk and you'll find yourself at Discovery Centre and Lamproom Theatre, all on the station's doorstep. For those in the mood for a Yorkshire stroll, grab a bus to Cannon Hall, based in 70 acres of historic parkland and gardens. It's the perfect setting for a picnic.
