Bangor station opened in 1848 as part of the Chester and Holyhead Railway, which was incorporated to link with London the Irish Mail coming through the port of Holyhead. The main building through which passengers pass today was built in 1927, but the original station buildings and their Victorian ornamentation, designed by railway architect Francis Thompson, still remain. They are best seen from the platform.

The station is to the south of Bangor city centre, where the High Street and its two large shopping centres are the main focus. A walk along the High Street from the station will bring you to Bangor Cathedral, built on the site of a 6th-century monastery. Above the cathedral stand the main buildings of Bangor University. Established in 1884, the university’s ten thousand students swell the city’s population for nine months of the year and guarantee a lively selection of pubs, cafés and bars in the city.
