Just twelve miles north of Manchester lies Atherton Railway Station, a trim two-platform station that daily sees passengers for destinations all across Manchester. First constructed in 1888, the station was originally opened as Atherton Central to avoid confusion with the now-defunct Atherton Bag Lane. Today, Atherton Railway Station is the busiest station on the Manchester to Southport line, excluded Manchester itself and Wigan.
During the week, Northern operates two trains from Atherton for Manchester Victoria (one of which continues to Blackburn via Todmorden) and for Wigan Wallgate (continuing northbound for Southport or Kirkby) each hour. These services operate on an hourly basis in the evening and on Sundays. Tickets may be purchased from the ticket office or the self-service machine available in the booking hall. Platform-level waiting rooms are available for passenger use, as are digital information screens, timetable posters, an automated PA system, and step-free access during staffed hours.
