Nestled along the scenic Cumbrian Coast Line, Askam Railway Station serves the villages of Askam-in-Furness and Ireleth. Originally built to transport the iron ore mined in the village of Askam, the station was a thoroughfare for a multitude of industrial rail lines, many of which were operational as late as the 1960s. Today Askam is one of few mandatory stops along this section of the line, and so all trains call here. On a typical weekday, the station sees 14 northbound trains to Carlisle, Millom or Sellafield; there are 15 trains from Askam for southern destinations including Barrow, Lancaster, and Preston. There are no Sunday services. These departures include a number of regularly scheduled trains along the Cumbrian Coast Line as well as some services along the Furness line.
Askam Railway Station's main building is Grade II listed, but is only in private use. The station is unstaffed, and tickets must be bought in advance or onboard from a ticket agent. Information screens, timetable posters, and telephone announcements are all available for customer use. Southbound trains from platform 1 have step-free access, but platform 2 trains are accessible only by a short staircase
