Ainsdale train station is located on Merseyrail’s northern Line and serves Ainsdale, linking it with Liverpool and the nearby Southport station. The station opened in 1848 as part of the Liverpool, Crosby and Southport Railway. Today, trains from Ainsdale depart every 15 minutes on weekdays and summer weekends. Winter Sundays have a half-hourly service.
Ainsdale itself is a residential area on the southern side of Southport. The Trans Pennine Trails and the Sefton coastal path both pass through Ainsdale, which is home to Southport and Ainsdale Golf Club, Ainsdale beach, and sand dunes which have been designated a nature reserve.
The station has two platforms linked by a footbridge with access via steps and a ramp. Since 2007, it has been improved with the addition of passenger toilets, electronic information screens and automatic doors. Ainsdale train station also underwent extensive refurbishment during 2017 and early 2018 to improve accessibility for pushchairs and wheelchair users.
Southport, to the north, is a train journey of just 12 minutes and, to the south, Liverpool Central is a 36 minute journey from Ainsdale.
