How to get to Pompeii from Naples by train

Take a direct train from Naples to Pompeii and discover Italy’s most famous Roman ruins in no time at all. The average journey time by train between Naples and Pompeii is 41 minutes, with around 35 trains per day. The journey time may be longer on weekends and holidays, so use our Journey Planner on at the top of the page to search for services on a specific travel date.

While it’s possible to travel from Naples to Pompeii with both the local Circumvesuviana railway and Italy’s national train company Trenitalia, we recommend you take Trenitalia’s regional train if you want to enjoy a newer and less crowded service. As Trenitalia’s station in Pompeii is right in the city centre, you’ll also be able to wander around the town before heading to the ruins. When it comes to visiting the ruins, you’ll be near Piazza Anfiteatro (or Amphitheatre Gate), which is usually emptier than the main entrance (Porta Marina), meaning less time spent queuing.

Located 14 miles (22 km) southeast of Naples, Pompeii is the perfect destination for a day trip from the home of pizza. Head to Villa dei Misteri and discover some of the most beautiful frescoes in all of Italy, or step back in time in the Amphitheatre, one of the best preserved and most visited Roman open-air venues in the world.

Travelling from Naples to Pompei on the Campania Express – June 2023

I was in Naples as part of a family trip around Italy, and whilst we were there Pompeii was a must-see. It was our last day of the trip and we wanted to make the most of our time, so we decided to travel on the Campania Express (also known as the tourist train) as it had the quickest journey time from Naples to Pompei, with less stops along the way than the usual Circumvesuviana or Trenitalia services. It did come with a higher price tag though - €25 for a round trip to Pompei and back.

Napoli Garibaldi station

We booked our tickets in advance the day before, so we had them ready to go when we arrived at Napoli Garibaldi station. There were clear signs throughout the station to the Campania Express platform, so it wasn’t difficult to find. When we arrived, we tried to go through the barriers but were told to wait at an area to the side where someone would take us down to the platform before the train departed to make sure we were on the right service. It got very busy as a lot of people were also travelling to Pompeii or Sorrento which was the train’s final destination.

Campania Express entrance at Naples train station

When it was time to board the train, a member of staff directly us through the barriers, down to the platform and onto the train where our tickets were checked. On board, you can walk through the entire length of the train from start to finish, which was handy as we had seat reservations so we could walk through easily to find our seats.

On board the train

Inside. the train was quite basic but spacious, with plastic seats arranged in groups of four, two and sometimes single seats. A big bonus of this train was the air-conditioning which we were all very grateful for as it was 34 degrees that day!

It took just under 30 minutes to reach Pompeii, stopping just once along the way at Ercolano Scavi.

Arriving at Pompei Scavi station

When we arrived at Pompei Scavi (Villa dei Misteri) station, the platform was directly next to the exit, so it was easy to find our way out. There were lots of different tour companies selling guided tours of Pompei, but we already had our tickets so headed straight out onto the street. The entrance to Pompeii was just a 5-minute walk down the road – easy to find as everyone else on the train was heading that way, and the street was lined with restaurants and stalls selling souvenirs.
