As there’s no direct train to Pompeii from Florence, you’ll need to stop in Naples and change. From Firenze Santa Maria Novella station take a direct Frecciarossa or Italo train and get off at Napoli Centrale, then follow the signs to get to Napoli Garibaldi station downstairs. Insider tip: make sure you board a regional train operated by Trenitalia rather than the slow commuter Circumvesuviana if you want to enjoy a newer and less crowded service.
Getting off at Pompeii train station, you’ll find yourself in the town centre, which you can start exploring before heading to the ruins. Stroll down Via Lepanto and Via Roma and grab a souvenir at one of the many boutiques and craft shops.
