Bergamo train station

Bergamo train station is located in the southeast of the city, in Piazza Guglielmo Marconi, and is on the line between Brescia and Lecco. Opened in 1854, it has seven platforms serving the general public with routes running locally and regionally. From the Lombardy region, Bergamo is easily reachable in under 1 hour. For this reason, Milan-Bergamo is a popular route for commuters travelling to and from work in the city, with many dedicated trains offering a journey time of around 50 minutes. Lecco-Bergamo is a 40-minute journey, whilst Brescia-Bergamo can be achieved in 50 minutes. Both are serviced by regular trains that run throughout the day. After arriving at the station, the centre can be reached via a good local bus service. Bergamo Airport can be reached in 10 to 15 minutes on the dedicated number 1 bus, which runs every 20 minutes during the day.

Main attractions near Bergamo train station

Leaving Bergamo station, visitors can take the funicolare (a type of cable tram) from right outside. In under a 10-minute journey this will lead to the picturesque area of Città Alta (Upper City), but without all that effort of walking! In the centre of the Città Alta is the old town square. This is home to Palazzo della Ragione, which is a government building that also plays host to a library, courthouse and theatre. The Campanone civic tower still has an active bell, and visitors who ascend to its summit are rewarded with views of the town and its surrounding valleys. Close by is Duomo di Bergamo, with its intricate facade and ornate interior, which is dedicated to the patron saint of the city.

A few minutes on foot from Bergamo train station will take visitors to the centre of the lower part of the town, Città Bassa (Lower City). This is a charming district, with grand palaces overlooking elegant streets. Unlike the narrow streets of the old town, the large Viale Giovanni XXIII road stretches right through this area. A few minutes of walking down it will lead to the monument of Vittorio Emanuele II, who was once Italy’s king. After passing Piazza Cavalieri di Vittorio Veneto, visitors will come across Sentierone, with its typical markets, vibrant colours, sounds and smells. Lined with shops, cafes and bars, it also plays host to cultural, gastronomic and artistic events. This lively area is a 10-minute walk from the station. Around here there are plenty of opportunities to taste some of the local produce, like casoncelli (a type of stuffed pasta), polenta and osei (a cupcake-style dessert) and delicious marzipan sweets.
