What is the Amsterdam Light Festival?
The Amsterdam Light Festival is the evolution of public-light art in Amsterdam. It began in 2009 as a Christmas Canal Parade, became a bit broader the next year with the Winter Magic Amsterdam event, before finally turning into the Amsterdam Light Festival in 2012. The Amsterdam Light Festival is now a seven-week festival featuring both a walking route and canal cruise tour.
Where is the Amsterdam Light Festival?
The Amsterdam Light Festival happens throughout the city, and whadda ya know, two of the best places to jump on the illuminated route are Amsterdam Centraal train station and Waterlooplein metro station. When is the Amsterdam Light Festival?
The 13th edition of the Amsterdam Light Festival returns from November 28, 2024, to January 19, 2025. The light spectacle lasts 53 days with the new theme: World of Rituals. Each day, the lights are turned on except on New Year’s Eve (December 31) when the city of Amsterdam rings in the New Year.
What time is the light festival in Amsterdam?
The Amsterdam Light Festival opening times are 5pm to 10pm (Mon to Weds), and 5pm to 11pm (Thurs to Sunday). During the Christmas holidays (December, 21 to January, 5), the lights are on from 5pm to 11pm every day. On New Year's Eve, the light artworks will be switched off. The canal boats start between 4:30pm – 10pm. The canal cruises take approximately 75 minutes and leave every 30 minutes between 4:45pm and 9:30pm. The walking tour is self-paced and can be explored any time the lights are on so you can embark on a voyage of discovery through Amsterdam’s canals.
Does the Amsterdam Light Festival cost money to experience?
Technically, no, you can enjoy the Amsterdam Light Festival without spending any euro. The walking route is open to the public so you’re free to bask in the lights as much or as little as you desire. The canal tours do cost money, with tickets starting at €26.50 or roughly $30. If you're confident on a bike, you can join a guided bicycle tour for €35.00 (about $38.90).
