Trenitalia route map 2025

Trenitalia trains cover the length and breadth of Italy. From the Alps in the north to the Mediterranean in the south, there's so much of this wonderful country to explore. Check out our Trenitalia map below for an overview of the Trenitalia network – we've provided some key routes covered by both high-speed and regional services.

Depending on your journey, you’ll be traveling on Le Frecce, Intercity or regional trains. Here are some of the most popular routes served by the different Trenitalia trains:

  • Rome to Naples – this is one of our most popular routes and is served primarily by Frecciarossa (shown by the red lines on the map). You can also take an Intercity or regional train for this route, but your journey will take longer.
  • Bari to Lecce – indicated on the map by the blue lines, Frecciabianca trains run on this route. The journey lasts about 1 hour, 20 minutes.
  • Rome to Bari – this route is grey on the map and is served by Frecciargento, Frecciarossa and Intercity trains. The journey time is around 4 hours on the fastest services.
  • Milan to Genoa – this route is served by Intercity trains, which is indicated by the purple line on the map. The journey lasts less than two hours and it’s direct!
  • Pisa to Florence – popular among tourists and locals alike, this route is operated by Regional trains (the green line on the map). It takes about an hour to get from Pisa to Florence, which is perfect if you want to go on a day trip.

How to get cheap Trenitalia tickets

If you want to find yourself a deal on Trenitalia train tickets, we’ll show you how you can find tickets for less. By using one or more of the tips below, you could be on your way to more affordable train travel.

Look out for sales and promo codes

Trenitalia sometimes runs sales or offers promo codes to use on their tickets. Keep an eye on our website for the latest updates.

Book in advance

Train tickets in Italy go on sale months before travel. Booking in advance can help you grab the cheapest tickets, as these tend to sell out quickly leaving only more expensive options available closer to your travel date.

Take advantage of Trenitalia’s offers

Trenitalia has many offers on its tickets, depending on how many people are traveling, where you’re going in Italy and when you decide to travel. There are also discounts for young people and seniors. Take a look at Trenitalia’s deals and discounts for more info.

Can I travel on Trenitalia trains with a Eurail Pass?

Score! You can use a Eurail Pass on Trenitalia trains across Italy. There are just a few extra steps depending on the type of train you’re traveling on – keep reading for more details.

The Eurail logo, a navy and yellow pictogram of a train track followed by the word Eurail

High-speed Frecciarossa, Frecciabianca and Frecciargento trains

Eurail Passes are valid on the following high-speed trains within Italy: Frecciarossa, Frecciargento, Frecciabianca. Seat reservations are compulsory and can be made up to 3 months in advance on Eurail’s website.

You cannot use a Eurail Pass on Trenitalia’s high-speed routes between Italy and another country (e.g. Paris to Milan on a Frecciarossa train). Eurail Passes are valid on domestic routes only.

Intercity and Intercity Notte trains

Intercity and Intercity Notte trains require you to book a seat reservation before travel. You can buy a seat reservation on the Eurail website.

Reservations for night trains can be purchased up to 6 months in advance, so it’s good to think ahead to ensure you get a spot! Seats are the cheapest, though other options such as couchettes and private cabins are also available for an additional cost.

Regional trains

You can travel on Trenitalia’s regional trains in Italy for as long as your Pass is valid. You don’t need a seat reservation for these trains, so you can simply add your journey to your Pass and hop on the train!

If seat reservations for the high-speed train you want to take have sold out, you can try to find an alternative route on regional trains, with no seat reservations needed!

Airport trains

If you’re flying into Italy to start your European rail adventure, why not think about taking the train for airport transfers in Italy?

It’s worth knowing that the Leonardo express, which connects Rome Fiumicino Airport to Roma Termini station, is only included with First Class Eurail Passes. Second Class Eurail Passholders will need to purchase a separate ticket for this service.

Trenitalia trains

Trenitalia trains are generally split into high-speed Frecce trains (Frecciarossa, Frecciargento and Frecciabianca), Intercity trains (including Intercity Notte) and Regional trains. Covering long-distance routes across the nation, Frecciarossa and Frecciargento services mean it’s easy to hop from city center to city center in Italy by train.

Read on for more information about the different types of Trenitalia trains, what you can find on board and where they can take you. If you want to find out more about each train’s travel classes, visit our dedicated page to compare Trenitalia First Class vs Second Class

Frecciarossa

Frecciarossa trains, known as the 'Red Arrow', are the crown jewel of the high-speed train network in Italy and can reach speeds of up to 300 km/h. The new Frecciarossa 1000 trains allow you to travel between cities like Rome and Milan in under 3 hours. Frecciarossa trains travel to cities such as Naples, Florence and Bologna on a daily basis.

You can choose between four classes when you travel on Frecciarossa – ExecutiveBusinessPremium and Standard. No matter the class you're in, you’ll find free WiFi, power outlets at every seat, the FRECCIABistrò bar car, the Easy Bistrò at-seat meal service, air conditioning, baggage storage areas and an onboard cleaning service to ensure you get the best customer experience.

Read more about Frecciarossa trains, where they can take you and what you can find in each class.

Frecciargento

While not quite hitting the same speeds as Frecciarossa, Frecciargento trains travel similar long-distance routes, connecting cities like Rome, Venice, Verona, Trieste, Genoa, Naples and Salerno in just as much comfort and at speeds of up to 250 km/h.

Many Frecciargento trains have two classes – First Class and Second Class. On the new Frecciargento ETR 700 trains, however, you can find three classes – Business, Premium and Standard. Much like all high-speed Trenitalia trains, all cars are equipped with WiFi, air conditioning, baggage storage areas and an onboard cleaning service. There's also the FRECCIABistrò bar car where you can buy food and drinks, particularly convenient for long-distance journeys.

Learn more about Frecciargento trains, popular routes and onboard services, including traveling in First Class.

Frecciabianca

Frecciabianca trains, or the 'White Arrow', also serve long-distance routes. Running at speeds of up to 200 km/h, these trains connect big and medium-sized cities, while guaranteeing great comfort and high-quality onboard services. For example, cities such as Bari and Lecce are easily connected to Naples, making travel into the main cities much more accessible for both tourists and commuters.

Frecciabianca trains offer spacious seats, air conditioning and an onboard café-bar. Check out our dedicated Frecciabianca page for more details about what you can expect.

Intercity and regional trains

In addition to Le Frecce, Trenitalia also operates Intercity, Intercity Notte and Regional trains. Covering shorter distances at slower speeds, these trains are ideal for those who are traveling locally, staying in a certain region, or just want to see what is in the next town over.

Intercity trains have two classes – First Class and Second Class– both of which offer power outlets, reading lights and reserved wheelchair spaces for disabled passengers. There are also Intercity Notte night trains, where you can sleep in bed cabins to save on the cost of a hotel. Bed cabins come with air-conditioning, a washbasin, complimentary toiletries and much more.

Regional trains are slower, serving towns and villages within a given region. If you’re looking to explore the local area where you’re staying, you’ll likely be using a regional train. An example is Cinque Terre Express, which can take you from La Spezia Centrale to all the main towns of the Cinque Terre National Park.

Fast-regional trains are also included in this category – namely, the Leonardo express service, which connects Roma Termini to Rome Fiumicino International Airport.

Trenitalia tickets

Trenitalia offers four ticket types, each of which varies in price and flexibility. This means there are different tickets you can potentially purchase for the same train. For example, there are three ticket types (Super Economy, Economy and Base) and four different classes (Standard, Premium, Business and Executive) on Frecciarossa trains, so it can become a little confusing as to which ticket is best to buy. To make this a bit clearer, we'll break down the different ticket types across Trenitalia's Frecce, Intercity and Regional trains for you.

Super Economy tickets

As the name may suggest, this is Trenitalia’s cheapest type of train ticket. If you know the time and date you want to travel on, then buying this train ticket will save you money. Trenitalia doesn’t usually offer refunds or exchanges on this ticket so if you want to cancel or amend your time of travel, you’ll have to purchase another ticket.

You can make this type of ticket refundable by purchasing the TiRimborso service – this costs €2 and you’ll get 90% of the ticket cost back if you cancel.

Economy tickets

Another cheap ticket, only this time, there's more flexibility in when you can travel. Trenitalia allows you to change the date or time of your ticket only once, but it must be for the same type of train and class. Typically, you'll also be required to pay the price difference between your current ticket and the full-price ticket of the new train you'll be traveling on.

As with Super Economy, refunds are not allowed except if you’ve bought the TiRimborso service which costs €1. You’ll receive 90% of your ticket price back if you need a refund.

Base tickets

Trenitalia's Base ticket is the standard fare for all journeys on Le Frecce and Intercity trains. While this ticket tends to be more expensive, it comes with the most flexibility.

You can change the date and time of your train ticket an unlimited number of times for free. Bear in mind that you'll need to pay the price difference between the two tickets if applicable.

On the day of travel, it’s also possible to hop on a different train to the one you’ve booked for €10 plus any difference in price.

This type of ticket is refundable, though Trenitalia will keep 20% of the ticket cost as a penalty fee.

Ordinaria

Ordinaria tickets are only available on Trenitalia’s Regional trains. This ticket type usually has a fixed price, which is determined by the class you travel in and the journey time.

While you can normally book the other tickets up to 6 months in advance (exceptions may apply), you don't need to buy Ordinaria tickets ahead of time unless you want peace of mind as the price will be the same.

30-59 minutes late

If your high-speed train (Frecciarossa, Frecciargento or Frecciabianca) is between 30 and 59 minutes late, you are entitled to a refund of 25% issued as a credit, which can be used on future purchases. You must use this credit within 12 months.

  • Delays over 120 minutes – 50% of the ticket price

In both instances, the refund can be claimed as a credit to be used on a future journey, as cash (if the original purchase was made in cash) or recredited to the card used to make the original purchase.

You must wait 24 hours after the completion of your journey to request a refund. Refund requests must be submitted through Trenitalia’s webform.

Delays on regional trains

If your regional train is delayed, you may be entitled to compensation:
