Visiting Newport

Soon after emerging from the railway tunnel beneath the River Severn, visitors from the east are welcomed to Wales by the cathedral and university city of Newport. Newport city centre lies between the railway station and the banks of the River Usk. It's a walkable collection of streets within which you'll find most of the town's shopping and entertainment options. This includes the Friars Walk shopping centre, the pedestrianised High Street and Bridge Street, and the Kingsway Shopping Centre, which is a little further to the south, just off Commercial Street.

To the east of the city centre, between the Riverfront Arts Centre and the University of South Wales campus, the Newport City Footbridge leads across the River Usk to Millenium Walk and Rodney Parade, home of the local rugby heroes the Newport Gwent Dragons. The Dragons play in the Pro12 professional league for teams from Wales, Ireland, Scotland and Italy, and they've also appeared in the Heineken Cup, the highest competition for club rugby in Europe.

Downstream from the stadium and the city centre, the skyline is dominated by one of the landmarks of Newport, the Transporter Bridge. Built in 1906, it is one of only six remaining transporter bridges anywhere in the world, and its visitor centre on the west bank of the river houses an exhibition telling the story of the vast structure and its place in Newport history.
